No repost so let's do something slightly more unusual again. Roughly a year ago I posted the '92 tape album by the Bulgarian Violetov General aka Виолетов генерал as seen here. Well, apparently today is the not-very-near future referred to in that entry for I decided to post another cassette album from the same year, also from a new / cold / dark wave (don't look at me, I copied that from Wikipedia!) band hailing from Bulgaria, Нова генерация alternatively known as Nova Generacia or even New Generation. Apparently they're a cult band in their own country, possibly elsewhere too, can't really say since I'm not at all well versed in this scene. Cover images borrowed from Discogs and rip from a dub I got years ago tape trading.

Ok, it must be said right away the dub is shitty, there's annoying disturbancy noise in it, very apparent in the first intro track already. For a while I wondered if it could be some sort of really, really stupid effect added to the music but that can't be. The sound would be otherwise fine so that's extra bothersome. If you happen to have a better rip I'd be happy to have it. Music is the usual wave stuff to be honest, with lyrics in Bulgarian which adds value to me since if I don't understand them, their quality can't bother me. The album title translates as "Beyond Death" so I assume it would be gloomy enough. Due the bad dub (I hate tapes, have I remembered to mention this?) not an optimal listen at all, but since I had ripped the damned thing I wanted to post it and perhaps spark someone's curiosity to find more about them. Not to mention possibly gain a better version for myself! Older material also welcome.

I better make the next post proper again.

Lately I've been listening to some slightly more unusual and not metal at all things and you get to suffer the side effects, too. Not that it'd be really that extraordinary at the Coven anyways. But you have to admit, we don't do Bulgarian post-punk/darkwave material that often. Or actually I believe Виолетов генерал, Violetov General to those not fluent with cyrillic letters, were labeled as cold wave? I'm only quite shallowly familiar with these genres. Anyways, I felt like posting the rip I made of my dub of their '92 album, released as far as I know only on cassette. Warning: the last track cuts and I don't know how much. It was all jammed onto one side of a 90 minute tape (which actually would typically have room for 46+ mins of material, like here). Wouldn't mind a complete version.

The sound and dub quality are both reasonably good, though at times it's obvious this was dubbed. Not that original tapes would not wear out. The music is somewhat morose sounding post-punk/new wave with a generally rather cold and alienated atmosphere. In other words, darkwave or coldwave. Wave this or that, is it any good? As said already, I'm by no means an expert in the genre(s) so it's necessary to take whatever I say with certain amount of caution. I find it better that average on what I've heard of the sort of music, admittedly the former Eastern Bloc background and aesthetic gives extra appeal to this. But have a listen if you feel adventurous. I'm not going to make a habit of this but there will be more similar stuff in the future. Not very near future, though.

Today I've decided to post another compilation tape master Sorvali sent me. Thanks again for the rip and scans to Henri! This is a bit unusual one, though unfortunately does not include extra goodies like the previous one's newsletter. The very non-standard length (a bit less than 38 minutes) is the thing that really puzzles me. Just about every other compilation tape ("A History of Time to Come" would be the first exception that comes to mind) was practically as long as the tape the person used (so either 60 or 90 minutes usually) and seeing as this was divided pretty evenly to two sides makes me wonder if the guy had scored a load of 40 minute tapes somewhere?

Ok, to content. Another thing that I was perplexed by was the timeline presented by the tracks here, four of the seven date to 1997, Tangrycan's track is from '96, Alcoholic Smashing War (jesus what a name!) dates to '98 and Moonsorrow is (again) featured with "Taistelu Pohjolasta" from the '99 demo. Did it really take so long to compile this? Or did he make three volumes and released them simultaneously when finished? And why does he stubbornly misspell Hödur as "Höndur"??? So many questions, so few answers and nobody probably cares. Well, I do so if you have more information, please share. Sound levels here are even and things flow surprisingly well, bands present are interesting enough and almost all play some variation of black/pagan metal (even A.S.W. - to my surprise) with the notable exception of Consecrated's gothic doom. A pretty neat little compilation.

 Ok, I've posted a bunch of zines before and tended to be pretty critical about them as you might've noticed. Especially when I've been drinking, like tonight. This is one of the sort I really disliked, trying to be a "professional" magazine but still with pretty much piss poor performance, coloured cover, short and shallow mostly one page interviews, brief reviews with high-ish grades... enough talk, at least they have some interesting bands to interview but generally these sort of "zines" were of no much use for me back then and even less these days. But experience it for yourself, there might be some amusing tidbits and at least you see another aspect of that day.

Our destination today is again the Balkan lands and the surrounding Slavonic domains with the second Beverina compilation, sent by Juris (thanks!) and ripped by me. Cover scans enclosed.

Much of what I wrote on the post for the first Beverina compilation applies here too, the main focus still being on pagan black metal but this time the Slavs outnumber the Balts seven to five. Also, there are no non-metal tracks, unfortunately for some and possibly fortunately for others. Unless you count Skyforger's live folk track. The musical line is a bit more focused on (folk) pagan black metal here but exceptions can be found in the death/doom by Dawn of Gehenna & Mental Home. Note that the covers misspell Estonian Tharaphita as Tharapitha - an error present in the upload, sorry I noticed that too late. Fix it manually. What more I should say about this? Well, it's a very interesting compilation if you enjoy Slavonic/Baltic heathen black metal with atmospheric and/or folky touches. Personally I enjoy most tracks 4, 5, 7, 11 and of course 12 - old Alkonost is a big long time favourite of mine! Least enjoyable would be Tangrycan whose vocals I can't seem to get into, not very keen on the drum machine either. This tape was in very good condition so there's not much in the glitch and impurity department - naturally some wear in inevitable. Not sure whether the first one or this is better but both are nonetheless recommendable.

I wrote I'd do some compilations too so I guess it's about time I post one. I thought I'd start with this compilation tape from 1998 released by Ancient Lakes Productions of Belarus, containing almost 90 minutes of death, doom, black and folky metal from the former Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance-countries. Mostly good sound and content ranges from the quite well-known and excellent to the never-heard and less than interesting. Overall it leaves a positive feeling and in many cases an urge to hear more. Speaking of which, I want more Maze Of Cako Torments so leave me a note if you have their demos. The compilation was ripped from my original copy which I got from who knows where, so it is a decent rip and scans of the covers are enclosed.

Another CD rip and again a little known band from eastern Europe, this time Bulgaria's Zaratustra with their excellent and unfortunately only album release "It Was A Night" from 1999. Zaratustra has an unique sound and an interesting Nietzchean concept, acquired taste some say but I like it very much.

Not much has been heard of the band for years now so it's pretty safe to assume they've split up, even though their site is still running. The label Counter Attack might still have the CD available, see if you can buy it from them if you like it.
