More Friday night filler follows, this time I'm posting black metal and the 7"EP by the US Sorath which often is considered to be a sort of pre-Black Funeral even though the Baron has disagreed on that in some interviews and both projects existed simultaneously for a time. But that's enough background banter... no it isn't, I should mention this is ripped from a cassette, not vinyl! Again. Cover images were sto...borrowed from Discogs.
As expected of 7"EP's, this release features only two tracks and is quite short, just over eight minutes. Which is quite average for two metal songs. Both tracks also appear on rehersal/demo 1994 but I'm not sure if they're from the same session or not as I don't have that one. The EP says these were recorded in October 1993 while rehearsal/demo only mentions winter 1993. The sound is quite rough and raw so these could easily be from that rehearsal session. There are some death metallish riffs present in Sorath's music which I have no problem with and the pace is either fast or slow, heavy midtempo. The Baron's vocals are the raspy shrieks and screams you remember from old Black Funeral but also added are some low growls which works. Thankfully brief narration also to start the second track. A good EP, would be nice to see a compilation of the Sorath material. Meanwhile try this if you like raw 90's black metal, usbm and so on.

Different session than that of the Winter Rehearsal tape, although a "studio" version of "The Moonlight Glittered..." is a bonus thereon, but it's slightly altered (nuance on the intro, alternative mix)... This 7" EP, and the Rehearsal Demo were by far the best material that Sorath recorded, as the "early demos" were truly awful shit, even when considered within the time that they were released! Never managed to get "The Darkness Returns" though, but I don't remember seeing it anywhere at the time nor since. You will have the Rehearsal Demo... Well, eventually, when I send some mail...

Thanks for confirming that info, appreciated. Yes, I remember hating the old demos but it's been quite long since I last heard them. I seem to have "Forest of Winter" on my computer though, I suppose I'll give it a go.
The Rehearsal Demo would be cool whenever you have the time... and I would like to hear the 1995 tape too. I guess I'll add it to the requests.
Ha, yea, I've searched hard and long to find "The Darkness..." but to no avail. Never saw it on a tape trading list, and similarly in the "internet age".
I guess that one of the possible reasons for this is the large number of things that Mr Ford was doing at that time, and 1995 was still the era of the infamous "Dungeons of Darkness" as well... Seems surprising in this day of re-issues no-one has considered Sorath, who hold a legitimate place as one of the earliest USBM acts.

Had a listen to "Forest of Winter" and looks like age doesn't make that one sound better. Should someone decide to make a Sorath reissue that one could be skipped.
I think I've seen "The Darkness..." on at least someone's trading list but that's so long ago it seems prudent to doubt my memory. Weird it has evaded you so thoroughly for all these years too, but then again things like this can pop up in unexpected times. Here's hoping.
I don't think that I ever ended up listening to "Forest of Winter", but if it's on par with "Sodomizing Jesus Christ" it must be awful. It should be noted that afterwards Mike (or Michael as he prefers to be known now) moved, which resulted in a different, and obviously much more capable, line up. I dare say that Michael is one of those people that is able to surround themselves with capable musicians, and guide them, without having a large degree of musical input himself... The Black Funeral albums, in their variation, are personal favourites from the US scene - there is an undeniable spirit in them at the very least which is almost wholly absent in other bands from that particular continent.

Well, if you ever feel it necessary I can give you a link to "Forest of Winter" or upload it myself. There probably will become a day, yet again, when I find myself thinking: "this isn't that bad after all..." - now I wonder if I should ever listen to it again.
Gotta agree with you on Black Funeral material. I am a little tempted to upload album advance tracks I have but I doubt the only real difference in sound comes from the poor quality of the dub!
