Death metal for change. Ok, today's item is not really that exciting as there have been rips of it available online since people started digitizing tapes I guess, but I still decided to upload mine as it came out pretty okay and I had bothered to make it in the first place! Not really purposefully though, this third tape recording of the Slovakian death metal band Sanatorium was the second item on a tape I was ripping in ...late '13 apparently! You can also pick up a copy quite cheaply on Discogs or somewhere and if you do, scan the covers for me.

Right, enough of your piteous attempts at justifying today's post, just get on with the program. As said, third release of Sanatorium and last before their debut album which was also the last in their old style of... ugh I hate trying to subcategorize death metal with my poor grasp of its nuances, well someone said thrash/grind mixture with touches of black/death metal so let's go with that! This incarnation of Sanatorium was notable for the atmospheric parts and melodic bits amidst all the technical wankery prowess and that stop-and-go zigzag stuff... breaks.. whatever as well as the lyrics being more on the if not poetic at least introspective and gloomy vein. On the second album and the subsequent ones, all released post-millennium, they went full-retard gore-soaked juvenile misogynic dumb brutal death metal which as you might guess I do not think very highly of. Not that I'd actually heard anything after "Internal Womb Cannibalism" but I possess just enough mental agility to at least leap very nimbly into conclusions. I must admit the indecipherable sewer gurgle vocals are amusing in scarce doses, now that I revisit IWC but it's still not my thing.

Back to what we have here, six tracks in ye olde 17ish minutes playtime which was oddly common among demos, meaning some of the tracks are quite short and actually I see the last two marked as bonuses, Rivers... being from the first demo "Subcultures" which I haven't heard and Č. Č. K. Č. Č is... special. The sound is quite good, very airy even returning to this after crawling through the mucky sewer tube of IWC, a bit light but that gives more room of the instruments to do their thing and fits the more melodic moments better. The ample fast parts also do not sound cluttered and messy which is a bonus. I must admit it goes a bit more bouncy and Primus than I really care for from time to time. And beginning of Desolated... is pure Maiden until it isn't. And then again it is, if Iron Maiden used raspy black metallish vocals mind you. Gallop gallop gallop. Now that I think about it more, this is actually pretty cheery when it's not too complex or melancholic. Schizophrenic and all over the place? Enough rambling, have a listen if all that made you curious. I don't know whom to recommend it really but I guess various kinds of people may get something out of it. What a horrible way to end a post.

Ok, for tonight I've another deviation from the norm and an item that actually delayed the whole blog schedule a bit. In the end we (I did, pathetic fictional division of responsibility) went with the idea of silence gives consent which I do not generally recommend as a guideline to follow in your daily lives. Anyways, this recording by the short-lived project by certain black/death metal luminaries called Loathsomeness is a release from the recenties. Mind you it sounds like a thing unearthed from the era of late 80's / early 90's of death metal underground. Not my most comfy nor familiar scene of operations, to be honest. Nevertheless, master Suuret Muinaiset who sent me the tape is an expert and should be consulted for further references of old death metal and especially obscure and possibly not healthy heavy metal.

Right, let's get back on topic - what we have here is a set of several short but brutal and filthy death metal tracks of crude and grindy sort. Sound quality is what you may expect from a rehearsal recording. I actually find it a bit hard to say anything reasonably smart about it, can't say I'd be big fan of this kind of gory death metal. But still, the recordings provide a slightly uncomfortable, perhaps a little dumb, journey until the unlisted outro part which is from a movie far more mean spirited than the tape hopes to be. I've been told a few more tracks were recorded but apparently not much came out of them. Enough banter, you'll pick this up if interested and otherwise may await the next post.

Naked Whipper - Sado Grind Metal (2000)

Naked Whipper - Sado Grind Metal compilation tape 2000
Naked Whipper 7"EP 1993

4) Enjoy the Act of Sodomy
5) Gorelash (Make the Women Whores)
6) Mass Excess (The Experience in Excrements)
7) Mushrooms
8) Enchristianization
9) Rape 'n Ride

Zippyshare / Yandex

Something different today, here's an unofficial tape compilation by Germany's Naked Whipper, considered a cult band by some and crap by others, released by... well, someone, around 2000. Ripped by yours truly from a dub I got the other year. I was supplied with a fancy colour print of the covers as well so scanned that too. They've a neat logo, always liked that. This tape compiles the '93 self-titled seven inch EP, all five minutes of it, and the mini-album released in '95 and limited to 300 copies, which was also the last Naked Whipper release. Now if you dig up a copy of the "Painstreaks" album you have the full discography for your pain/pleasure. Painsure? Pleain?

The name of the compilation pretty much sums N.W. up. I used to think of them as sort of poor man's (early) Impaled Nazarene back in the day, which depending on various factors may or may not do them justice. To be honest, old Beherit or Blasphemy is a closer comparison. I'm actually reminded of their country mates Lacerated Gods too, both by the black'n'grind sound and the vague misogyny presented by certain song titles. To the music: the first three tracks are all fast and short numbers that put more emphasis on the grind part of their formula, the second one being probably the best of the lot with most variation and cool Beheritic whispering voices tossed in. The 1995 part starts with a number borrowed from Peter Jackson's "Meet the Feebles" (1989) followed by the original content. Sound is slightly cleaner and pace not as frantic as on the EP tracks. This part also sounds more like I.N. (circa "Sadogoat"/"Ugra-Karma") than Blasphemy/Tireheb. Must say now as I listen to through it repeatedly that it's not as intense and the longest song Mass Excess sounds a bit dragged out. Now I want to give "Painstreaks" a go next, I'm off to do that and you may judge this for yourselves.

Confusion Corporation - Purify demo 1995

Confusion Corporation - Purify demo II 1995
1) As the Brass Turns the Wall Green
2) Industrial Intellect
3) World Corruption
4) Contained
5) Forward to Extinction
6) Chains of Simplicity
7) Inorganic Beings

RGhost / Zippyshare

One more UK contribution, this was sent by brother Grev to satify my curiosity sparked by the first Confusion Corporation demo posted here earlier. Thank you and whoever originally ripped this! He did not have cover scans but I found a pretty decent image on the Discogs entry and used that. Decent quality rip at old standard bitrate (192 if you really didn't know).

A piano opens the first track, giving way to strings a bit further in. Intro piece, nice and moody, touch of neoclassical feel here and there. The piano returns to finish and next piece is much heavier then and so seems to be the overall sound, the music continuing quite logically where they left off on the previous demo. Death metal and grindcore elements mix with (sparse) industrial metal tricks and even some punk, resulting in... uh, some sort of cyber punk grind metal? Much of what I wrote last time applies here though there's a bit more of everything, notably Fear Factoryesque clean backing vocals, but it seems somewhat more focused than the previous tape. I recall my initial listen to this after Grev had sent it was somewhat unenthusiastic but hearing it now, side-by-side with the older demo it sounds much better and I'm not sure why I thought the other tape superior and this dissappointing. Now the tables would appear to have been turned. Not that much to add, it'd still fit the old Earache roster, not a big fan of the cover art, slightly better than the first tape (at least right now).

4) Compassion
5) Intensified Tribulation
6) Existence

RGhost / Mediafire

I wanted to do some contributions again, this was sent by comrade grindfreak, thanks for your donations! Confusion Corporation hail from UK and made a bunch of demos which I haven't heard except for this one. And here they're performing in a genre not most familiar to me, death metal mixed with grindcore, reminding me of stuff Earache used to release. And probably still do? There are also bits and actually a general overall feeling to this that brings to mind early industrial metal acts, also from the same roster, such as Pitchshifter and Godflesh. It really moves quite a plenty around the yard instead of sitting just in the swing or making a castle in the sandbox, slow doomy moments, fast bursts, growling, screamy voice, clean vocals and other condiments aplenty. Quite interesting really, maybe I should try to get a hold of the other demos too.

Good sound, I suppose grindfreak had an original tape but for some reason included only a partial scan of the cover, judging from the Metal Archives image I compared it to. There's a little shift in sound quality on the fifth track, to better though, but in general it's good. Like I already said, it's interesting and I wouldn't mind hearing the other demos too. Not too sure how it would fare in larger portions but as a snack it's nice. Recommended for people into the umm, associated genres, other open-minded readers and the generally curious.

Anal Jesus - Sado-Ritual rehearsal/demo '93

Anal Jesus - Sado-Ritual rehearsal/demo I 1993
1) Sado-Ritual (Intro)
2) Perkele!
3) Elämäni savotta
4) Tabu
5) Musta risti
6) Amrus atsum (outro)

RGhost / Yandex

We again interrupt the regular programming for the benefit of Anal Jesus, I found and ripped the first rehearsal demo mentioned in the previous episode. Now this is important: if you for various reasons haven't yet heard the Santa Goat rehearsal, download and listen to this first!!!

It is very regrettable I posted this material (once again) in wrong order as the third demo is clearly superior in almost all aspects to this debut recording and it would probably have been best to listen to these in correct order. Well, I don't have the second one so it would have not been possible to do it all the way but I suppose you got my point. Ripped from a dub someone sent me long ago, details obscured by time and dust but it seems to me the outro might cut a bit. Not such a loss to be honest as it's a simple and a bit annoying affair of Honkonen whispering/panting something obscure/-scene to one's left ear. Still no cover or other pictures.

Ok, a few words about the content, I suppose I already made it clear I prefer the tape III to this one as the sound is vastly superior as is the performance in general but this is not without merits. After all, three of the epics here were re-recorded. That leaves the only "new" pieces of music here to be the intro, the outro I already dismissed and the instrumental "Tabu" which further stresses the point that it would be good to listen to things in proper chronological order. The intro is actually the longest track on the tape and it's masterfully compiled from three different parts. Or not. Amusing enough, I suppose. The sound is not as crazy awesome as on SG, this is a slightly more subdued one which sort of reminds me of demo and rehearsal ImpNaz, maybe Beherit a little. Naturally Morningstar too. It's quite good despite my whining. Listening to these versions of the already familiar tracks I can't help thinking it'd be awesome to hear some of them re-recorded. I definitely need to get the second tape from Grev, recommended and if possible listen to this first, then the third one!

I was going to post something else, another contribution but as I happened across this unfinished rip forgotten (for four years, oops!) in a wrong folder I felt I have to finish it and post right now, especially since I remember people have been looking for the damn thing. This is (yet) another project by Morningstar leader Ari "Sinister Satyr" Honkonen, the infamous Anal Jesus which supposedly changed name to Warmaul but as far as I know didn't release anything under that monicker. This is the third and last in the series of short rehearsal tapes they recorded, I don't know if there was a cover made or not, at least I haven't seen any. Master Honkonen wasn't too co-operative either when I asked about this project back in the day ('95) while getting some Morningstar stuff, could he have been embarassed? Well, if someone happens to have a cover or more info on the matter I'd appreciate it.

I certainly didn't score this one, nor anything else Anal Jesus recorded, from Arska and now I'm not actually sure where I got this dub, it was either from a tape trader or from one of my old mates. Whatever the source was, it's a little worn but certainly bearable quality recording with a bit of hissing present, no notable glitches. The rehearsal itself has a surprisingly good sound, it's noisy for sure but in a good way. Sounds somewhere between Terveet Kädet, Beherit's "Messe des Morts" and old Impaled Nazarene or something like that. At total running time of seven minutes these six tracks are all short and savage bursts, but on the average perhaps not as fast as you might expect. I recall I was not really too impressed with this stuff, though it was amusing enough, but listening to it now after years have passed I actually seem to enjoy it quite a bit. I might need to grab the second demo from Grev and dig up the first one, should have that dubbed somewhere. Have a listen for yourself, it's not going to take too much of your time after all.

UPDATE: Found and ripped the first demo, listen to that first if you still haven't head this one!!! Both are recommended.

I'm back with another contribution that has been waiting on the limbo of my old HD for too long though this time I had a semi-decent excuse for my hesitation - you see I tried to find a little additional information on this NZ compilation tape but came up with none. The main issue here is that it's lacking completely the artist of the 16th track. So if anyone could elaborate on the last artist and/or provide a cover scan that would be very much appreciated! UPDATE: Got one from comrade F! Thanks! Tracklisting edited and corrected in both post and folder, please re-download for corrected version with the full cover.

Like mentioned above, this compilation tape was a contribution by Stephen, a reader from NZ, thanks again, and features a bunch of bands playing various styles of death metal, from grinding blasts to black metal to slow churning doomy metal of death. A quite good representation of the NZ scene circa 1993 or so (release of the tape was in January 1994) and recommended listen to all into death metal. Especially now that I got the last track fixed with the artist's name and tracklisting in general!

I think it is about time to give a sign of life from the Coven. I have a new computer and things again more or less in hand - some of you might have noticed I've been reuploading some of the gone-with-Mega items for the past few weeks. Some are still MIA but luckily brother Grev has just about all of them, thanks man what would I do without you? Anyways, he's a busy man and I don't want to pester him too much so you'll still have to wait for me to get everything back. But let's get to the point here shall we?

This one is a contribution by mr. Chris Rigby, former bass player of Convulsion and Meatyard here whose demo he kindly sent me. Thanks! I have edited a little, namely just chopped it up into separate tracks, nothing else. Music is death/grind, or goregrind is probably more accurate term, fast and brutal stuff. As I am not much an expert in this field I'm not going to elaborate much, except mention that it sounds heavy and pummeling, with a notable low-end rumble. Give it a try to see for yourself! Includes cover scan in pdf-format.

Convulsion (nz) - A Pickled Feast demo 1993
1)
Lobotomized Whores
2) Bits of Dog
3) Pickled in Pus

Reuploaded

Another contribution by Fenrirsson, this is a demo from the NZ goregrind/death metal band Convulsion. Ripped from his original copy, the sound is obviously of the underground demo sort but quite good and fitting, slightly murky and heavy. Cover scan enclosed.

Even if this is goregrind/death metal, don't expect all-out blasting, there is a good share of slow, heavy, ponderous mauling on display here. Especially the first track is more like Visecral Evisceration than Dead Infection. Pace picks up on the second track but it's still more midtempo than anything which was a pleasant surprise for me on the first listen. There's some dual vocals thrown in for good effect as well and I'm actually reminded of Germany's Mangled Torsos on their debut "Drawings of the Dead" even though it's a later release. Last track continues pretty much where second left off, with a slightly briskier pace. I like this. Recommended for people into heavy and cavernous, murky death metal with a vile atmosphere.

UPDATE: Well, to prove even us ghoulish figures at AC are human it appears the original upload was not correct and tracks 2 & 3 were switched around. Oops. No excuses, just download it again, it's corrected now.

Necrospiritual - Promo-Demo -94

Necrospiritual - Promo-Demo 1994
1)
Fantasy In My Omen
2)
Winter Clouds
3) Awakening God

Reuploaded

Another Finnish demo and this one is again donated by brother SuuretMuinaiset, thanks for the rip & scans! Necrospiritual, formerly known as Catatonia, was a surprisingly obscure band active in the early-mid 90's and released two tapes, I guess, source is the ever-reliable Metal Archives and my even less reliable memory, under this name. Why surprisingly obscure you might ask? Well, because I remember seeing their flyers quite a lot at some point and remember several distro and trader lists carrying their demos, yet it took me until SM's contribution here to actually hear the band. Why so long? Mainly because the music was described as grind/death with black metal elements which wasn't my thing back at the day, I simply skipped them.

So is the description accurate? Yeah pretty much, though it's not that grindy. Quite good sound, though at a low volume, SM ripped this from an original tape. Two short and one "normal" lenght songs, simple & catchy stuff. I'd recommend this to people into black/death and obviously the gotta catch 'em all-collectors and seekers of obscurity. Not much more to add.

Back to metal and my "Turkish death metal" - series, here's another demo I got from the same trader, the 1st version of Deathroom's 1993 demo. Comes with a xeroxed cover and has slightly different tracklisting compared to the 2nd edition, see below for that cover (taken from the MySpace):

Music is grinding death metal, basically quite old schoolish but with some interesting bits thrown in like the melodic part on "Destrudo" and the instrumentals. Good, clear demo sound. I find myself liking this quite a bit, despite some of the lyrics being more life metal than necessary. Check it out if you're into death metal.

11) Funeral Urn - Prophecy of the Dead
12) Estuary Of Calamity - My Castle
13) Archgoat - Rise of the Black Moon

Reuploaded

Time for another compilation, this is the one I mentioned at the Belphegor post. And does feature the "whole" Belphegor demo as one track. Made in Greece by a guy called Kostas who apparently made a 'zine too (the cover - which is included - mentions it) this is a black metal compilation even though it features stuff that's not really black metal like the death doomy bands Italian Catacomb and Greek Desulphurize. Ok, the rest are various forms of bm, ranging from the classic Greek style of Thou Art Lord to the raw usbm of Sorath and the Norwegian 2nd wave defining Gorgoroth. Not to mention Katatonia's essential classic "Without God". Too bad they quit.

Unfortunately this 60 min compilation suffers from its sound. I don't know if its due the tape or the equipment the guy used while making and dubbing these but somewhere along the line it got a little screwy and the volumes fucked. And no, it's not due my rip thank you. I know a bit better what I'm doing by now. Anyways, I cut out most of the extra clicks, snaps, crackles and pops. Didn't do much else with it though, so it still hisses and crackles some. And now that I listen I left quite a few in after all. Fear not, it is still listenable quality and hey, this is authentic feeling! Except you don't have to turn the tape around and all that.

Technical details aside, this is a pretty cool tape. The mixture of bands is interesting enough, with some very well known (I.N., Katatonia, T.A.L.) and some obscure (Funeral Urn, Estuary of Calamity, I guess Twilight too) names included and styles ranging from the atmospheric and doomy (Katatonia, Catacomb) to the raw black (Twilight, Sorath) and still onto grindy punishment (Belphegor, Archgoat). It must be mentioned almost all of the "proper" black metal here is on the raw side, which is of course fine by me! Many very good, even excellent tracks, included like my old faves 3, 6, 8 & 10. Actually the only ones I don't like are the Belphegor and Estuary Of Calamity contributions. First is shit and second doesn't seem to connect with me... though I like the slow part. Maybe it'll grow on me, I need to try their demo out. But you check out this compilation already, I don't think you came here to read.

Belphegor (us) - Blasphemous Prayers demo 1993

2) Annoint in Jehovah Blood

Mediafire / Megaupload

Ok this one is kind of cheating. But on the other hand, so must have those poor sods felt who had ordered this demo with it's nearly three minutes of music. Well, depends how fond of you're of the genre I suppose, and how much the band asked for this demo not to mention the possibility it could've been dubbed on a 60 or 90 min tape. So how am I cheating here? I don't have this demo myself but I have a compilation tape which featured the whole (almost) three minutes of it. Even if the compilation maker only listed on of the tracks. Well, I'll get back to that once I post the tape. Cover seen above borrowed from Metal Archives.

This is music not really for me. Full speed ahead, noisy and brutal mixture of black metal and grindcore. More of the latter than the first one. The sound is pretty bad but that's partly thanks to the guy who dubbed the compilation. I like brutal shit like Blasphemy and so on but this isn't my gasmask filled with vomit at all. Check it out if you've three minutes to spare (well make it more since you need to download and extract it, maybe even over five minutes), or are a lunatic frothing from the mouth fanatic totally committed to this sort of stuff.

One Turkish demo more, this one, like the previous one, is a mixure of death & grind. However, there are some unusual moments that I might dare call atmospheric scattered about, most notably the whole of track 5. Most of the time it's fast-paced death/grind with ok sound and grunting vocals. I received the cover for this one, so it's scanned and enclosed. Lyrical content would appear to be life metal. As is typical for this genre, the tracks are short and the demo lasts just a bit less than ten minutes. I'll keep the post short too, so go ahead and download it. Or don't.

More Turkish brutality and Obscurity. Which is the name of this band here, and a host of others. However, this one played goregrind or death/grind, I'm not so good with these genres, and released only this single demo as far as I know. You might wonder at the image up there? Well, M.A. didn't have any sort of image on their entry nor could I find one so I scanned MySpace for a Turkish death metal or grind Obscurity and found this one. The profile was kind of empty otherwise so I just borrowed this and decided it was meant to be the same band. Anyways...
UPDATE: The Archives page was updated with band pic, logo and demo cover which you can see to the right and is included in the reupped folder. However, I kept the top pic because it's cool.

To the content. No less than 12 tracks here but most are very short, a bit less than 2 minutes average. Raw and brutal sounding death/grind but some of the tracks manage to contain quite a bit of groove in them which is nice. I like the sound and the harsh, snarling main vocals. The lyrics are your usual dumb misogynic splatter stuff, with the odd exception (Gipsy Ward). Since they're mostly incomprehensible, I don't let them annoy me too much. I actually kind of like this, so I guess I can recommend it in pretty good conscience. Oh yeah the dub & rip quality are ok too.
