Return to Poland is in schedule, though again with a little twist. Today's post is a contribution by our reader Opiekacz and this is his one man band Host, where he operated using the name Grzechu ("sin") and a 2008 CDr compilation of two demos dating to end of 2002 (November and December). The actual disc was released in pretty limited quantity but he's had the files available elsewhere, so I'm making sort of an exception here. Most links seem dead, so I guess it is justified really. No actual cover scan, but he included a flyer which has almost the same image as the cover had anyways so let's go with that.

You're probably expecting bedroom black metal by now? And yes, that is somewhat justified as the production is quite minimalistic, drums by machine (UPDATE: nope, electronic drums human-played) and generally things have that computerized feeling. Sound is of the clean and clear variety, guitars slightly weaker than vocals and percussion... well, they're actually pretty much on the same level, neither strings nor pounds drown other one out. It's fine, not trying to pass for necro and considering the music fits decently. Voice is raspy and rough, but still quite sing-songy, reminds me a little bit of Master's Hammer actually. The music is, as already hinted, not of the standard sulking in the sleeping chamber variety either, actually it's also closer to "The Jilemnice Occultist" than "A Gate Through Bloodstained Mirrors" as it sounds in places very close to classical inspired heavy metal. Or is it power metal? Well, I guess you know what I mean. The minimalistic naming sense is an interesting decision too, seeing as the songs are titled Path 1 and so on and the demos just by month of release. Or actually the CDr cover just mentioned tracks 1,2 and 3,4 so perhaps he retconned that. Well, whatever the case might be it's different from what one might expect and agreeable in a dose of this size, a bit under half an hour. Have a listen if you don't mind some neoclassical leanings in your black or maybe more accurately dark metal.

I have to ask friends for translation because google is doing it wrong :D
...maybe one day I'll learn English.

Grzechu ("sin")- Grzechu is a variation about Grzegorz/my name
Sinner - grzesznik
Sinful - grzeszny
Grzegorz,grzeszny,grzesznik,"Grzechu" - phonetically very similar

"drums by machine" - not quite,drummer was alive and he played normally
but his drums were electronic :) Yamaha DTX950K

Sin - grzech
Grzech(u) - something like hereof/thereof/that one's sin

@Opie:

Ok, thanks for the clarification, I'll add a mention of the electronic drums there! Sounded suspiciously "varied" for drummachine, should've thought of electronic drums really.

Awesome stuff here. Thank you Grzechu for making it available and to our illustrious host (no pun intended) for serving it. The electronic drumming offers great support, and I particularly like the ride cymbal effect in Track 1. That's a rarely--if ever--heard technique in BM that adds a lot to the track to my ear. I'm typically wary of recent model year stuff that gets posted here, because my muscle memory autopilots my ears and brain to go into "lo-fi crap sound" mode when I check in here. But the sounds are terrific and the good production is a help, not a hindrance. Great stuff. And I enjoy both the fuller instrumentation of the first part as well as the rougher tracks in the second part. Thanks all.

@kingpossum:

Nice to read you enjoyed this little side trek. As a bit of trivia, höst is Swedish for autumn so if we add the wee dots to the band name too it is even more appropriate, no?

The pleasure is all mine kingpossum

Host has many meanings that's why I chose this name :)
- hostia: host / wafer (in church)
- dozorca/gospodarz: householder/landlord
- pan domu: master of house/family's head
- chlebodawca: breadwinner
Also autumn but it's not everything :D

Host with C at the beginning

By letter "x" was written sometimes phone "ch".
There is a presumption that the Gall Anonymous writing his "Chronicle ..."
benefited from the oldest written sources, where the Piast was written as the son of a "Choszecza" or "Choszycza" - "prince" or "Moon".

Chościsko - by Gall Anonymous, Piast's father, a progenitor of the Piast dynasty. His name probably meaning the tail (of CHOST / tassel) appears in Polish Chronicle in the sense twice:

Chościsko is also called Prince Popiel in the title of the first chapter of the first book.

Another version says that "Choscisko" or "tail", "tassel", "scythe"
means "braid", and thus one of the symbols of power in the early Middle Ages.
Long hair symbolized power for example in the Merovingian kings.

Choscisko is also broom,witch's broom
Choscisko is a nickname meaning just a prince

In the Lower Sorbian language Choscisko; is a Ger. Besenstiel [6] means a stick.

Originally, the word stick meant "hammer"
and it was nickname for head of the family like Charles Martel "Hammer".

I'm curious what you say @kingpossum when you hear a demo 2010 :)
Nightmarish sound quality :D but I recorded alone in a room for myself
in order to do not forget ideas

@Opiekacz:
What I meant is that normally the stuff that Velkaarn posts are early 1990s recordings that sound terrible. Yours sounds great because it was recorded more recently and with good equipment, obviously. Many of the rehearsal and live recordings that are normally posted here are very low sound quality. Which, strangely, often enhances the listening experience. It's just unusual for Velkaarn to post something as recent as 2010. Your music is great and has a lot of fine touches.
