A cool, almost chilling wind blows outside as is expected of June in Finland. Summer always makes me think of Southern black metal so this is a good opportunity to welcome the season with a contribution by our comrade unholydeath. We stay in 1993 and this is the first and only demo released under the name of Filii Nigrantium Infernalium, formerly ('89-'92) Bactherion, a still surviving Portuguese cult band with rather scarce discography. Unholydeath included enormous cover scans for your reversed reading displeasure, thanks again for that and the rip!

Right, I know several rips have floated in the cyberspace since the beginning of virtual reality but since this is a good rip and the demo is a classic with plenty of character I wanted to feature it. In case you're not familiar with it yet, there are three long (seven minutes and more) songs and a shorter, interlude-like one of mostly slow tempo black metal sung in Portuguese. Calling it black/doom would not be out of place. Actually it was quite unique for its time but didn't get much attention. I remember people were talking (read: bitching) more about the reversed writing and logo than the music. Clear sound with prominent bass and vocals which sound like tormentous shrieks forced out of a possession victim. Much of the time dual which adds to the effect. Gotta love that messed up "solo" bit in the late part of "Retorno..." they don't make music like this anymore! Early Samael might be a reasonable name drop once again, Necromantia could be another. But I have mass to attend so enough words. Recommended and I really wish I'd find their old live tape I know I have somewhere!

Annwn - Promo-tape 1995

Annwn - Promo-Tape 1995
1) The Canticle - Part I (In a Forest of Shadows)
2) Midnight Ellapse
3) One Night on Raven Wings
4) The Dead Are Just... Sleeping!!!
5) In Cold Winter Darkness

Reuploaded

I have a bit of catching up to do so without further ado, this is Annwn of Portugal whom the Metal Archives labels as "atmospheric doom/black metal" which at least on this tape is poppycock. The music is dark ambient/dungeon synth with some sparingly used vocals, reminds me actually quite a bit of the Balam/Laïlheb demos, especially the last track though generally not as obscure and morbidly tenebrous. Despite the name, not Celtic or in general folky either! Thanks to the contributor who sent me the rip, no covers though so we must make do with pitiful MA image.

Five tracks for 22+ minutes, so on the average quite typical metal song playtimes and nothing drags on for too long or ends abruptly. Sound is good and instrumentation is keyboards, guitar, possibly bass and like mentioned, some voices. It's a bit on the fence but I'll go ahead and call it dungeon synth rather than say black ambient which it does resemble too, it's obviously more about moods, atmospheres and such like things rather than rituals, invocations, séance or celebration of evil, though the last track begs to differ. I had forgotten about it, but looks like the hilariously titled The Dead Are Just... Sleeping!!! (which is also another standout track) was featured on the "Southern Assault vol.1" compilation CD. Though the running time listed on the cover there does not match what I have here at all... must examine further, perhaps it's a shorter version? Enough of that, this is pretty good and I wonder if the second (?) demo "The Canticle - part II" mentioned on the Archives page would be metal or more in the same vein. As usual, if you find yourself in possession of that tape get in touch with me!

Serpent Lore - Brandishing Damnation Sword demo 1998

Serpent Lore - Brandishing Damnation Sword demo 1998
1) Grimstone Craved
2) The Night Neverending
3) Sears Within the Soul
4) The Freezing Moon (A Tribute to the True Mayhem)

Yandex / 4shared

Another black metal demo from Portugal is upon the alter today, also supplied by master Sorvali, this is Serpent Lore and their '98 tape which also seems to be their only release. Several band members have since continued with a number of black metal bands, all firmly in the never-heard department for me. Ripped from an original tape with cover scans included.

A bit longer songs again this time, though no quarter hour mammoths here, the Mayhem tribute (=cover) has the longest running time of the lot at six minutes. Good enough sounding demo, quite balanced. First thing I noticed on the first track was the pretty traditional heavy metal riffs. Then there are synths. And solos. And more heavy metal. Not very kvlt and grim sort of black metal here, but that's okay you know, better they have more of that Mediterranean touch to proceedings than trying to sound northern, frozen, cold and fake. At times they do stray a bit more into power metallish territory than would be necessary but in general it stays closer to Mortuary Drape than Stratovarius so I am condoning this. The songs aren't exactly catchy, close to that but slightly staying out of grasp, just a bit, fingertips graze but cannot quite reach them. I need sleep, you might want to take a listen to this. Oh yeah, the Mayhem cover is clearly based more on the DMDS-version than the older which would more accurately be called "The Freezing Moon" but I'm completely fine with that as DMDS > anything else by Mayhem. Form small groups and discuss.

Amorak - ...In the Dark Northern Moonlight demo I 1997
1) Invoking an Evening Storm
2) Across the Elysian Fields
3) Amorak
4) Timeless Secrets Beyond the Ancient Flame
5) Behold Seth's Dream
6) Relieved Under Sorrow (Drowned in Waters)

RGhost / Mediafire

Enough of Teutonia for now, we return later but for now let's travel south to Lusitania and some more of Henri's contributions again, this is the first demo of the black metal band Amorak. Thanks again for the contributions! Amorak released two tapes before disbanding, according to M.A. and looks like this one was released with both coloured and black/white/grey glossy (judging from the readability) covers as the scans I've here are of the latter variety.

Intro, outro and four tracks which are on the shorter side for change and mostly the music is quite fast paced too. Quite clear demo sound with very distinct drums this time. Vocals are quite typical raspy black metal croaks and barks that occasionally change to high shrieks. There are some good moments and promising moments like the last proper track's beginning, but generally I seem to have a hard time saying anything really interesting about this. Quite average black metal demo at the end of the day, perhaps my opinion might change after repeat listens or returning to it another time. Worth giving it a listen or two despite my current lack of enthusiasm.

'Til Your Ears Bleed: Vol III European Attack (2000)

Various Artists - 'Til Your Ears Bleed: Vol III European Attack compilation tape (2000)
1) Moonsorrow - Taistelu Pohjolasta
2) Hödur - Unpure Race
3) Tharapitha - Demon's Night
4) Alcoholic Smashing War - Hail to a Long Awaited Alcoholic Victory
5) Eviternity - Cant IV
6) Tangrycan - Immortalize Sacrament
7) Consecrated - The Charming Voice

Rusfolder / Mediafire

Today I've decided to post another compilation tape master Sorvali sent me. Thanks again for the rip and scans to Henri! This is a bit unusual one, though unfortunately does not include extra goodies like the previous one's newsletter. The very non-standard length (a bit less than 38 minutes) is the thing that really puzzles me. Just about every other compilation tape ("A History of Time to Come" would be the first exception that comes to mind) was practically as long as the tape the person used (so either 60 or 90 minutes usually) and seeing as this was divided pretty evenly to two sides makes me wonder if the guy had scored a load of 40 minute tapes somewhere?

Ok, to content. Another thing that I was perplexed by was the timeline presented by the tracks here, four of the seven date to 1997, Tangrycan's track is from '96, Alcoholic Smashing War (jesus what a name!) dates to '98 and Moonsorrow is (again) featured with "Taistelu Pohjolasta" from the '99 demo. Did it really take so long to compile this? Or did he make three volumes and released them simultaneously when finished? And why does he stubbornly misspell Hödur as "Höndur"??? So many questions, so few answers and nobody probably cares. Well, I do so if you have more information, please share. Sound levels here are even and things flow surprisingly well, bands present are interesting enough and almost all play some variation of black/pagan metal (even A.S.W. - to my surprise) with the notable exception of Consecrated's gothic doom. A pretty neat little compilation.

Moonspell - Live in Zürich 13.10.1995

Moonspell - Live in Zürich, Switzerland 13th October 1995
1) Wolfshade (A Werewolf Masquerade)
2) Love Crimes
3) ...of Dream and Drama (Midnight Ride)
4) An Erotic Alchemy
5) Lua d'Inverno
6) Alma Mater

Yandex

Once again I'm posting a live tape the night before going to a festival and probably unsurprising, it's Moonspell '95. At least this time I have the excuse of mr. Dominik Matus requesting me to upload whatever live recordings I may have left in the vaults. So, we start with this one which I had kind of forgotten in the ready items folder. This naturally was sent by a tape trader so it is a dub of unknown generation, though the sound is fairly good. A really half-hearted cover of the cuddly wolves thrown together by a lazy blogger.

Decent sound like I said, this is a little shorter gig again, though not as short as the ones during the "Battle of the Ages" tour supporting Immortal & Morbid Angel (most I have posted are from that), this lasts a bit less than 28 minutes. It appears the person who recorded this missed a possible intro as well as the start of the first track. Not too much missing so shouldn't be a grave issue. Personally I'm quite pleased they changed the set by dropping "Vampiria" (unless they played it first and it's missing) and adding "An Erotic Alchemy" to its place. Yup, not really a lot to say as I've posted already a few of these gigs. This has a bit better than average sound so I suppose this'd be a good spot to start if you haven't dared to pick up these live recordings before. I'm off to sleep and to Jalometalli in the morning.

Thorns (por) - Promo '94

Thorns (por) - Promo '94
1) Welcome to Your Doom
2) The Kingdom Beyond

Mediafire / RGhost

Something different today, here's (again?!) some heavy metal from Portugal. I got this tape from one of my tape traders and yes, you probably guessed the band name got me to pick it. I wasn't too excited when I listened to it as basic heavy metal was not really something of interest to me back then. Listening to it now after a long break... it's still not really my shot of vodka. I'm really, really picky when it comes to "ordinary" heavy metal, power metal and whatever. Though it does have certain crude charm to it, much better than overpolished Helloween pastiches. I'd warm up even more to this were I drunk. Sound is a bit on the quiet side, might have to do with the unknown generation dub, but otherwise good enough and is the reason for much of the appeal. I better try listening to this while drinking.

No covers or much anything, being made from a dub and apparently the band changed their name to Please Remember quite soon after releasing this tape (Metal Archives actually lists this under that monicker but I'll go with my trader's info here!) and made another promo in 1997 as well as appearing on a compilation (or few). Not much else to say, give it a shot, it's not bad after all.

Ironsword - Promo 1995

Ironsword - Promo 1995
1) Intro
2) I Am the Defender
3) The Flame and the Sword
4) Battlecry

Mediafire / Depositfiles

A bit unusual genre for the Coven today, straight old heavy metal from the Portuguese project/band Ironsword. You're probably wondering how I happened to have it in the first place? Well, Ironsword was the project of a former Moonspell guitarist Tann who also played in Decayed and basically that got me curious to hear this tape. After confirming that yes indeed it's basic old heavy metal I lost interest and didn't get the further recordings. Ripped from a traded dub so no cover, image from Metal Archives used.

I've noticed growing old people suddenly start to listen to old heavy metal again. This is partially true with me as well, though I stick to the oldies I liked back then and don't like most of the newcomers or seek actively out new old bands of the genre. So how does this effort sound now after all these years? Well, slightly more appealing than back then but it's definitely no masterpiece. The sound is quite poor for this sort of metal, though a seasoned black metal rehearsal tape listener isn't fazed to the slightest. I like my heavy metal rough and dirty instead of polished and sugary. The vocals are quite amateurish and don't go too high for most of the time, which I find preferable. Machine drums, pretty ok guitar sound. I should probably check out how these guys (I think it's a full band nowadays) have changed over the years but as for this tape, I rather pick up some old Maiden, Manowar, W.A.S.P., Running Wild etc. (you get the idea) for my heavy metal needs. But check it out if you like undergroundish heavy metal with challenging sound or are interested in Portuguese demo bands! I'd like to hear the 1998 promo if anyone happens to have it.

Decayed - Rehearsal 25.02.1994

Decayed - Rehearsal 25.02.1994
1) Black Funeral (Mercyful Fate cover)
2) In Lustful Mayhem

Depostifiles / Mediafire

Another short rehearsal tape today, a bit longer than the SotM one but not much! This is Decayed from Portugal and they do a Mercyful Fate cover and a song of their own, for a grand total of slightly less than six minutes. Tape traded item for which no real cover exists, I edited someone's (forgot who it was well sorry) photo of a Portuguese graveyard and slapped the Decayed logo and symbols from a few old releases on it.

In the early 90's the Portuguese black metal scene was based on three pillars: Moonspell, whom you might know, Filii Nigrantium Infernalium, formerly known as Bactherion and Decayed. Several others soon popped up and followed them but these three were best known to the international underground and amazingly enough all three are still active. Where Moonspell has been changing their style several times and have become quite famous the other two have more or less stuck to the old school sound and their style, though FNI went more retroish from the doomy (and better) style of their demo, as well as remaining less known and in the underground. Decayed's black metal is very much influenced by the first wave bands and most of their releases tend to have a cover (or two) from their mentors.

This rehearsal tape has a very loud and thus a bit messy sound but it is listenable, with all the instruments discernible despite the ruckus. No keyboards here. Fast paced, filthy, chaotic and traditionalist without being exactly retro Decayed is old school black metal in the vein of early Bathory rather than degenerate 'black'/thrash like Abigail today or quasi-punk pseudo bm. In a way this rehearsal tape sounds more satisfying than the "In Lustful Mayhem" album from 1995, it's rawer and has more energy to it. Recommended for fans of old style black metal, or those who enjoy a raw sound.

5) Trebaruna
6) Wolfshade (A Werewolf Masquerade)

Depositfiles / Mediafire

I'm off to Nummirock tomorrow (morning - I should get to bed) and again I've decided to post a live tape in honour of the event. This one I actually ripped already ages ago (September 2009!) but it was sort of forgotten in a desktop folder on my old PC. I recently re-discovered it as I was going through the files of the old HD and there was much rejoicing. Anyways, this is yet another Moonspell live from 1995, longtime readers might remember my fondness for them. This is probably my last, if we don't count 1½ tracks clip I've from Rockefeller/Oslo gig, so now my supply seems to be finally exhausted. If you have recordings of the missing dates, feel free to share!

This might be my last one but also possibly the best - the setlist is longer than on the previous dates and includes all the tracks of the regular "Wolfheart" album. Ok, the setlist on the July Bradford gig could be argued better as it had "Opus Diabolicum" from the MCD but then again this one has "Trebaruna" and a superior sound. Yes, this has very good sound. Quite powerful and you can sort out everything with little effort. There are some shifts in volume and so on, probably due the person moving, but it is not that distraction. If you like old Moonspell, this is very much recommended. And no, it certainly has no cover, I just edited some cover art to decorate the post.

Dark Prophecy - Promo Tape 1992

Dark Prophecy (por) - Promo Tape 1992
1)
Intro (The Evocation)
2) False Church
3) Intro (The Possession)
4) The Judgement Day

Mediafire

An older item today and a traded items, but for change one I got a cover for. Portugal's Dark Prophecy is probably an unknown name for most, yet some might recognize Celtic Dance formed by some of the members after the split of this band. They seem to have been quite fond of intros as the first Celtic Dance demo also featured an intro and outro for each of its two "proper" tracks. But enough about that.

This tape was recorded at their rehearsal place (except for the intros which are taken from movies I can't identify, help appreciated if you can) which is quite obvious. The sound isn't really bad, just very... stripped down and neither very powerful or evil. Certainly old schoolish and crude, sloppy playing, errors and all. So if you enjoy southern style old school black metal with a primitive rehearsal sound check out this tape.

Since Mandrake asked me, I'm happily posting yet another Moonspell live from the 1995 fall tour. This time they're playing in München, at an unknown venue. If you happen to know where this was, feel free to share your info! Like you probably guessed, I got this from one of my traders again.

The setlist is the exact same slightly under half an hour affair they've done for most of these September/October 1995 gigs, but the quality of this particular recording is well above average and it's full set, no hassles or cock ups and with a decent enough performance to boot so if you want to pick just one of these shows, this would be a very strong candidate. Obviously recommended to Moonspell fans & bootleg collectors. Good one.

Drawned In Tears - Deep demo II 1996
1)
Temptation
2) Bloodgates
3) My Wings Are of Steel
4) The Song of Wounded Love

Mediafire

This post is a bit redundant as this bands' material is available at the Portugal Underground, but since I had ripped it already (and P.U.'s link seems to be dead) I decided to go and upload it anyway. My rip is made from a pretty good dub I got from a trader friend in late 90s, no cover image and the one at Metal Archives once again makes a stamp look like a goddamn wallpaper so I'm not bothering with it. Instead, I picked their logo. Which is kind of cool.

The band plays what would be best described as death/doom with gothic touches on this demo. They're from Portugal. No, I wouldn't say they sound like Moonspell. It's quite easy on the ears stuff, with good production and mostly moves ahead at frisky midtempo. Music that Century Media, Nuclear Blast & Napalm started to spew out like it was a competition in the late 90's. Not from the fruitiest end of the scale still, yet think it's kind of pop, not gloomy and doomy enough for my taste and definition of doom. But it's really not bad so you might want to give them a chance.

Love Crimes
2) ...Of Dream And Drama (Midnight Ride)
3) Vampiria
4) Alma Mater

Reuploaded

After the Turkish invasion it's time to move to post something more standard for this blog and what could be more standard than a Moonspell live from 1995? Yeah, here's another! Two days before the Beerse gig posted back in Dec 09 and another short one as they were a warm-up act on this tour.

As you notice it's only four tracks and "Love Crimes" isn't all from the beginning so I assume the person who recorded this came in late and most likely missed the first track which must have been "Wolfshade". His recording is okay, the start is less than promising as he probably moves about a little, but the sound settles quite soon and remains very listenable for the rest of the time. Don't know if it's due to my trader's equipment or the original recording, but it favours the right speaker quite strongly. It's not as distracting as I feared while ripping, though. Ok, if you've enjoyed the Moonspell posts so far you'll grab this too. If not, you'll wait for something else I suppose.

It feels natural to move from Spain to Portugal and yes, yet another Moonspell live. Though this one is again a little different, being for change from the 1996 tour, promoting "Irreligious" which I was personally a little dissappointed with after "Wolfheart". I've gotten around to listen to it later, if you're interested. Anyways, this show in Sverige's capital Stockholm consists of material from both full-lenghts released at the time and I must say I'm not too thrilled to have "Vampiria" here yet again from "Wolfheart" as I feel there would have been better choices. But apparently the crowd loves it as they keep having it in their set. And this was long before "Twilight" mind you.

I find the sound quite good, but apparently they did not as there is a lenghty and annoying soundcheck in between "For a Taste of Eternity" and the aforementioned "Vampiria". Of course I kept it with the rip but pitied the listeners enough to have it at the end of the track. I don't think there is really much to add, if you enjoy Moonspell of this era you will want to download this. Others will probably wait for another upload. And yes, there's still more coming.

Celestial Dark - Slowly Flying in the Dark demo 1995

Celestial Dark - Slowly Flying in the Dark demo 1995

Intro
2) Slowly Flying in the Dark
3) Agony and Pain

Yandex

Today's post is another demo I've ripped already a while ago, but hesitated to upload; you see this demo by the Portuguese dark death/doom metallers Celestial Dark had quite a fair share of hissing which I tried to clean with debatable results. After a period of deliberating (and fixing the incorrect title of the 3rd track) I decided to upload and post the uncleaned version instead as a little bit of tape hiss just adds up to the demo atmosphere, right? But you probably aren't very interested in all that.

To the music, this demo which I got from a Portuguese trader contact in the 90s contains an intro and two quite long songs of dramatic, doomy dark metal with touches of gothic and black metal. More gothic than black metal. I heard the "Agony and Pain" track on a compilation CD which contained black and dark metal bands from Portugal originally and tracked down this demo. I was a little dissappointed with it containing only one song and an intro more. Nowadays I'm not as much excited of the demo as I was back then, but it's still ok stuff. I'm interested in hearing their "Perpetual Tears" demo so let me know if you have it or got a link to it. That is all.

What a surprise, I'm posting another Moonspell live bootleg! Well this one is different being a show from 1993 which means it features all the demo songs (including "Serpent Angel" from their Morbid God-days) and early versions of tracks that appear on their MCD "Under the Moonspell" released in 1994. The versions played here naturally differ from the MCD versions and "Tenebrarum Oratorium"(-s) lyrics appear to have been expanded/re-written. Fernando's vocals are naturally not quite as refined as later. There are also several screw ups every now and then but the enthusiasm and energy makes up for a few mistakes, agree? The sound is actually good, much better than I remembered. I received this dub from one of my tape traders long ago, my first Moonspell live recording actually. Ok, not much more to add, recommended download not only for Moonspell fans but also to anyone interested in old "southern" black metal.

Actually, I'd be pleased to receive confirmation of the venue, so if you know anything feel free to share.

EDIT: Received information on the venue from the person who videotaped the show back then, this was also the first Moonspell performance! Thanks for the infos! Venue info corrected on the current upload.

Yet another Moonspell live from 1995 - I did warn you I was fond of these and am still interested to get all and any I'm missing. As you see the setlist is the same as on the Kåren gig posted earlier and my swap comment applies here as well. This has a very even if slightly muffled sound, but it's surely good by bootleg standards and easy on the ears. Performance is ok too. I'm not certain of the venue as for some reason it's not written on my cassette or cover, I think it might've been Paradiso, can anyone please confirm?

UPDATE: Yup, it's Paradiso all right, but the date was incorrect, 3rd not 8th! This error might actually be due the handwriting in the tracklisting I originally got but don't remember for sure.

Re-reuploaded

Here is another live tape and also another item from Portugal's death/doom dreamers Desire. One of their early gigs, they perform here most of the debut album "Infinity..." and the oldie "Death Blessed..." from their Incarnated-days. Most of the tracks are shorter versions than on the album, which naturally fits the live setting. Sound is clear if dominated by the vocals and drums, I wish the guitar would be more up on the mix. The vocals don't come off as well on this live as they do on album but I guess that's understandable. With its minor flaws, it's a good live recording from one of the better melancholic death/doom bands.

Desire - Advance Tracks 95, promo 1995

Desire (Portugal) - "Advance Tracks 95" promo 1995
1)
The Purest Dreamer
2) (Leaving) This Land of the Eternal Desires

Yandex

Previous post was the band's 1993 promo track and now here we've their 2 song promo from 1995, released under the new name. The music has evolved, song structures being more complicated, synth is more prominent and vocals varied but they're still the same band at heart, playing death/doom. The songs were recorded during rehearsal sessions in March 1995, in S.T.S. studios so I'm not sure if this should be tagged as rehearsal or not as it hardly sounds like rehersal tapes I'm used to.

Both of these two (long! 8:15 & 12:50) tracks appear also on their debut album "Infinity..." but these versions sound different enough to merit a download and a listen. I don't think "Infinity..." has been re-released so I'm not certain of its availability, I know the label Skyfall Records has been dead for years, so I might rip & post the debut album later as well.

EDIT: MediaFire link which lead to wrong file fixed here too. Damn I've been sloppy.
EDIT II: Not going to bother ripping the album as you can find it already.
