Moving along the coastline to west we arrive in Germany and it's time to fulfill an old request (I think, not sure anymore) with the help of comrade Baldemar, thanks for the rip and scan! This is Martyrium with their first demo "Through the Aeon" from 1992. Martyrium, along with Ungod was among the first second wave German black metal bands to release an album and after their split up Daevas went on to form Secrets of the Moon and Ferneus started Mosu Quma. Which is all super-interesting but let's not move forward and instead concentrate on Martyrium for now. I recall from somewhere this was supposed to have crappy rehearsal quality but I must disagree with that, the sound is very clear and crispy. Clearer than on the following demo if more "hollow" and spacious so to say. Not exactly powerful though and the vocals are dominant but everything can be heard with ease. I increased the volume slightly but did no other meddling. Sounds very underground and nostalgic to my ears.

Three of the songs here would appear on the album "L.V.X. Occulta" as well, the versions here are a bit more stripped down (no keyboards, "Lucifer Rising" has no intro, that sort of stuff) but in general Martyrium's vision was pretty much unchanged in the few years of their activity (and somewhat carried on to early SotM). If you haven't heard "Arcanum de via Occulta" (which I'd need a better rip of, by the way) or the album this won't be a bad place to start I suppose, their take on occult black metal was quite unique and tended to be very divisive affair in general. If you're interested in the early (second wave) German black metal this is pretty much mandatory but recommended to others as well.

Thank you so much Velkaarn - for both Martyrium and Northland demos!
I wanted both of those for a very long time, I stopped hoping I'd ever get them and now - thanks to you and your contributors - these works of art are finally available! Huge thank you!

@Borderline:

You're very welcome! I was actually about to ask if you have a better rip of the second Martyrium demo but it'd seem like you were listening to the same 128 kbps version (really low volume)?

I know I had another rip somewhere but maybe it was in the drive that went kaput the other year. Damn.

Oh yeah, the Northland demo was really cool, I wish the last one comes up too.

Hails!

About Martyrium's second demo... I have it (original tape and 160 kbps rip).

Also I've some live recordings (1993 & 1994)

Anyway. Thanks for all the new rips on your mighty blog brother \m/

@Grev:

Oh good, can you send me the rip, I'd like to check it, I'm sure it's better than the one I've presently! And I better remember those live tapes, I'm going to want 'em.

GREV kirjoitti...

@Velkaarn.

Sure, I'll send it to you asap. and those live tapes I'll send it too.

Do you need a scans for demo #2.?

So, I'll be back

Velkaarn kirjoitti...

@Grev:

Yes, scans would be great, thanks!

I have "Arcanum de Via Occulta" already on the "to do" list, as well as a few live tracks. Always enjoyed Martyrium's unorthodox BM, and Aharon carried this on a little with Exordium 235.

@Fenrirsson:

Me too, and I got a better rip of "Arcanum..." from Grev as well as live tapes from Annaberg '93 and Neumagen '94. Did you have those as well? The '93 one has rather poor sound, '94 much better.

I don't think I've heard Aharon's Exordium, better check that one out. Thanks for the tip!
