Here's a contribution that's been on my folder for quite long already and it's another non-metal item, this is the 1996 tape from the Russian Cthulhu, later renamed Cthulhu Biomechanical after a change in style and it was a side project of Draugwath/Blackdeath members Para Bellum and Abysslooker. This was released on Para Bellum's Hungry AK-47 Productions, clip 03. I was looking for a rip or a copy of this for some time but fortunately comrade DM had gotten a rip from somewhere and sent it to me, thanks. Notice that the rip was mistagged as CB which is just incorrect. I also edited it slightly to remove some annoying snaps and crackles between the tracks. No cover scans, would appreciate them.

Musically this is dark and quite spooky ambient, Para Bellum calls it "Darkest Cosmic Trance Music" on an interview and I suppose his description is accurate. He also mentions they used only guitars and basses for the recording, no keyboards, which is quite amazing. The music does reach spheres of cosmic otherness worthy of the concept and name and works better than for example Black Orchid as they've kept it instrumental. Some had compared this to Neptune Towers but this is much darker. It sounds like dungeon synth at times, but can you call it dungeon synth if they have used no keyboards? In any case, recommended.

Guitars probably feature a lot more than you'd realise on many so-called "Dark Ambient" releases. I would be of the opinion, given the length of time it has been since I listened to this, that it was recorded on an analogue 4-track, with much use of tape reverb techniques and a similar amount of "pitch" changing. Tape is ideal for the latter (which is essentially just a change of speed of the cassette during either recording or mixdown) as it retains a lot more sound than using digital equipment for the same (usually a very fractured sound at best, totally destroyed at worst).

Was intending on ripping this for yourself (same old story), but good to see someone has beaten me to it given my laziness for doing such things nowadays. I don't have the cover either!

@DF:

Yeah, of course you're right and most of the old ambient/experimental and related releases were made using tape loops, various samples and whatnot instead of just keyboards. I'm sure you're very well versed in these techniques. These methods often produce very unique results.

How did you like this, by the way?

I remember thinking that it was a pretty good release, especially in comparison to some of the less serious non metal side projects being produced at that point. I think that the best part of it is that it's a project made by "metal" musicians, which doesn't sound like an arrogant attempt to journey into a genre that they'd only scraped the surface of. I have a respect for the guys behind it though, because they never gave a FUCK about making compromises nor censoring their standpoints like so many others. I was gutted when the full length album didn't arrive due to a rip off label though, and I still haven't heard it to this day. First world issues.

@Fenrirsson:

You mean "Es ist kalt hier" with the album I suppose, released as Cthulhu Biomechanical? I got a rip of that as well, preferred this one myself and probably won't upload it as it should be quite easily available on CD.

By the way, you still have the Lord Kaos demo? I could really use the rip, seems to be quite hard to find. Same with the Necromancy (swe).

Yes, I still have both of them ripped already (fuck, I think that you emailed me about some covers recently too!). The quality of the Lord Kaos demo is pretty horrific though, even by underground standards. I'm working through getting stuff in the mail rather than upload myself, just due to connection limitations.
