Here is the second Dolch demo sent by Weaver, again thanks for the contributions! Dungeon synth and ripped by W from his copy.

Compared to the first demo the music on this one is a bit more complex and uses more elements than the somewhat minimalistic debut. The number of songs has increased while the overall duration lessened, meaning most of the tracks are notably shorter than on the debut and also differ more from one another, making this feel less of a whole to me. I'm reminded more of a soundtrack work, perhaps for a vintage RPG, than an album. Also, it's not completely instrumental, some heavily-effected vocals have been added to some of the tracks. Often this is not a very good choice in this genre, Mortiis himself tends to suck when he uses them. Here they do not ruin the whole as the effects used render them almost incomprehensible which is positive in a way. Yeah. Nice stuff, enjoyable and probably more exciting due the variation but I feel like I prefer the first demo myself.

This treads into martial/neo-classical territory. I like it, and it's so different from the first demo as to almost be by another artist.

@kingpossum:

Yeah, the added percussions certainly lend it that martial feel and it sure is different. I wonder if there's more than these two tapes and how different a third one would be?

I loved this one. I think it is better than the first, and just has the exact kind of sound I look for in dungeon synth. At least that's the first few listens anyways. I agree that the vocals aren't great, but unlike a lot of others in the genre (Shadowcaster), I think they're easy to ignore and don't really detract from the music.

Velkaarn kirjoitti...

@Andrew:

Well, the vocals aren't really that bad, I just would've preferred to have none!

Shadowcaster's second tape is pretty much ruined by the first track's super annoying vocals. I probably could experiment by skipping that and trying to listen to just the rest of it but somehow it sounds like work.

I couldn't tell you which one is my favourite but either way I'm really glad I found these tapes and bought them blindly, they're both so amazingly good. Unlike the 7 or so "Ensis et Carnis" tapes I bought that are so amazingly bad

Velkaarn kirjoitti...

@Weaver:

Yeah, these ones are good and if you bought them blind it makes them even better.

Ensis et Carnis huh? And 7 tapes, that's quite a lot. Quantity over quality stuff I presume.

Unknown kirjoitti...

Yeah all these ones: mhttp://www.discogs.com/artist/Ensis+et+Carnis

It's just really odd music. Kind of a mixture between lots of elements including non-metal Summoning stuff with 80s pop music drum beats and death growls. It's really unique but horrible, if you're interested I could rip one I guess

Velkaarn kirjoitti...

@Weaver:

That sounds plain awful. I'm sure it's horrible like you describe... but still it looks strangely fascinating, by all means if you have the time please rip a tape of your choice. I'm almost sure I won't like it but I am curious!

Alright well I've uploaded it here for anybody interested: http://www.mediafire.com/?adxwg00qjracnu6

Enjoy (???)

@Weaver:

Cheers, downloading as I type this!

Blessings WeaverBM! I'm always up to check out unique but horrible.

kingpossum kirjoitti...

Okay as long as we're mining this stream of horribleness check out the stuff here. You'll hate me for it.

Here's hoping we don't cost you your readers, Velkaarn.

It doesn't sound so bad. Vocals are a little goofy, but I think it's pretty cool, actually.

Velkaarn kirjoitti...

Gentlemen, I somehow guessed you'd rush to listen anything described as vividly as Weaver did. :D

It's not as awful as I envisioned, but on my second listen I can say with confidence it's not good either. There are, annoying enough, cool elements in it. Given enough exposure it probably will grow on the listener. A bit like cancer.

@kingpossum:

That link has ...interesting stuff. Love the shoddy-looking cover art of the releases and the general "vintage internet"-appearance of the site! I suppose you've familiarized yourself with some of that there?

Andrew Werdna kirjoitti...

Hey, I'm familiar with that Hekaloth stuff. I've had some Xynfonica and Shevalreq albums for a while. Kingpossum is right, it is some really grotesque stuff, but for some reason I'm always drawn back. They have a powerful atmosphere of severe mental illness, like full-blown schizophrenia or something.

Velkaarn kirjoitti...

@Andrew:

Hmm, slightly surprising. Though I have to say I'm quite intrigued reading some of those descriptions. Shevalreq and Thursar especially sound interesting, I like traditional Chinese music.

kingpossum kirjoitti...

@Velkaarn:

Yes, I have some of the Shevalreq and Xynfonica stuff. As I see Andrew does too.

And like both of you, the Ensis et Carnis I find quite listenable. Great to have this stuff exposed.

Thanks for the shares everybody.

@Weaver

Could you please upload the rest of the Ensis Et Carnis tapes? Impossible to find anywhere. Thanks again!

@BHZ:

I have my doubts if Weaver happens to read this comment but I can try to see if I have his email and ask him. Do not get too hopeful though!
