I'm going to attend a gig today so I felt like posting a live bootleg would be in order (plus the coin came up tails), here's a live show from 1997 which I ripped from a tape sent by one of my traders by a band most of you probably know already. I recall it was this same show that was on "Live in Frostland" bootleg CD but can't verify as I don't have that one. Tracklisting is very similar but I believe they did the same set just about everywhere around then. Could be same recording, could be not, it doesn't matter. Less than epic cover took many precious minutes of my life to make.

This is an audience recording with a pretty decent sound. It gets a little messy at times which is to be expected considering the Emperor material of 1997 combined with their live performing experience at the time and Tavastia itself. Very listenable still if you're a veteran bearing many scars (probably mostly emotional) of listening to the live bootlegs I've uploaded so far. Even a rookie should manage. The second album wasn't out yet by this time so the audience is a bit at loss with the new tracks from time to time yet curiously some of the people seem to recognize them. I don't think things leaked to the internet yet at that time, advance tapes or something maybe? Unfortunately, as is quite typical, we get to "enjoy" some dialogue of the spectators as a byproduct of the audience recording status. At least it's not of the worst sort and adds character, local colour and whatnot to the recording. The setlist and show itself is okay, I would certainly have prefered more "Wrath of the Tyrant" material in (that's what I always do - it doesn't even have to be Emperor on stage) and something more from "In the Nightside Eclipse" or at least I would've swapped "The Majesty..." in favour of something else. Naturally the band would be keen on playing the new stuff, that's understandable, but it's quite challenging thing to do when the album's not out yet. The encore is pretty damn lame, didn't they really have anything else rehearsed?!? Oh well, the more I listen to this the better it actually sounds and I start to feel a need to drink beer so something is definitely right. Recommended if you like Emperor and are not a pussy that can't stomach a raw live sound. Especially as it's not that rough a ride!

This show was partially released as pressed CD bootleg "Live in Frostland": http://www.discogs.com/Emperor-Live-In-Frostland/release/369417

Had it once as FLAC but I don't remember how it sounded. Need to check this one now.

Thanks for the post Velkaarn. On an unrelated note I saw Iceage last week and they were monster.

I know they're overhyped, but they played phenomenally and stirred up the most furious pit I've ever seen at the Echo or anywhere else.

All Hail to the Mighty Emperor! I remember that gig very well. I was there with my friends and I enjoy it very much! By the way. Yandex is fast as hell!

@Ud:

Yeah I was pretty sure it was the same show but can't say I'd remember either how that CD sounded and if it was this same recording it was made from, though that seems most likely.

kp:

That sounds interesting but overhyped? I guess so though I don't think I had even heard of 'em, first thing that name brings to my mind is Protector's Ice Ages project which I enjoy. I guess I'll need to check out this one too.

GREV:

I wish I'd been there too, I think I was either stuck working or too broke to go back then, can't remember which one of those or maybe both! Were you also at the Satyricon gig the same (or was it '96?) year?

Yandex is fast for the end user? That's good news, it took me a little while to figure out but seems to be working okay so far!

@Velkaarn:

Iceage is a Danish hardcore band, all in their teens. Tremendously talented. They mix the dour artfulness of Joy Division and the fury of Refused.

They get tons of fawning press here.

And I'll second GREV's comment. Yandex is mega fast indeed.

@kp:

Hardcore band? That'd explain why I've never heard of them, don't follow those bands or scene at all. Though I don't mind seeing some live when I come across them.

@Velkaarn:

I follow specific bands more than the overall hardcore scene itself. Too much of it is just thug-dumb hypermasculine stupidity. But occasionally artists turn up who are more evolved, and Iceage is one of them.

Local club the Echo hosts the annual Power of the Riff festival, a daylong event with a mixed lineup of metal, drone, desert, hardcore and noise bands. Sunno))) headlined last year.

It's always great fun and a great way to discover new acts along with the veterans. And to stay current on craft beers and small batch bourbons, of course.

Yeah, I was in Satyricon's gig, but also I couldn't remember the year? In those glorious days I saw many BM-gig, when I (almost) live in Norway. I date Norwegian BM-girl and we went many concerts... oh, those were the days :)

@kp:

I see, it's quite similar situation for me with several genres of music I occasionally listen to. That event seems cool, a good chance to pick up acts you otherwise might not seek out like you mentioned.

@G:

I didn't make it to the Satyricon gig either, whichever year it was! There weren't as many gigs back then as in the recent years so missing the gigs was a bigger deal.

Argh! I Forget to change my google profile... but it's done now :)
